So for this model, i decided to start the process by just sitting down and trying to think of objects that could be in the room. The brainstorming process was not even thinking of a specific layout, but just spamming a bulleted list with a minimum of 50 things to look at. I figured that this would make for enough objects to create, that the room would be full of visual interest, by virtue of just simply being full of stuff. Lots of Stuff. And that stuff would help fill in the story of what was going on, and what the space was used for. I decided that the actual building process would come after i decided what needed to be built. That list is at the bottom of the page.
I started with building the furniture. Just this process alone was a lot of fun. I ended up using legos to sketch out the build, so i could get an approximate sense of scale, and shape for each object. I landed on using the legos for a rudimentary scale as well. 2 stud units to a foot. This gave reasonable scale, and things fell into place.
The desk was me having too much fun with adding structural detail. Here you can see the lego sketch next to the final project!
Here was a dry fit, to make sure that all the pieces actually fit in the room, and that it still felt comfortable. Maybe i over did it, but oh well!
once i had most of the content built, it was truly a tough task to paint it. Im not as practiced at this part, and i was getting a lot of really flat looking pieces. I tried dry brushing, to minimal success, but i cant expect to be good at it on my first try. I got it to work in splace places, but decided not to worry too much about it. I sewed up a few pieces, like the blankets, and a banner. I used water color to make some additional pieces, like metal part, book covers, the felt of the writing desk, and other details. Then i needed to start the floor. Oh no the floor. The floor i decided was going to be individually cut, arranged, and glued pieces of paper to make the floor pop out a little from the wood floor, which would be painted the grout color. This was laborious becuase i picked a very thick paper. I couldnt water color it ahead of time, becuase then the cut edges would be a distractingly white color. I would need the water color on the edges as well. So i cup, rounded, painted, arranged, and glued all of these stones over the course of about 4 hours, broken into a few session.
